'Step Back in Time: A Walking Tour of Black Mountain' exhibition opens at Swannanoa Valley Museum

The exhibit will be in the museum’s first floor gallery alongside the museum’s major exhibition for 2018, “Black Mountain College and Black Mountain, NC: When ‘Town’ Meets ‘Gown.’” Both will be up Saturday, April 14 until Saturday, June 23 during operating hours (Tuesday–Saturday 10 a.m.–5 p.m.). The museum is at 223 W. State St., Black Mountain.During a 4-6 p.m. members-only preview Friday, April 13, museum supporters will get first crack at purchasing the paintings and exploring the museum’s other new exhibitions. Beginning April 14, the remaining paintings will be on sale to the general public. Forty percent of the sale price will benefit the nonprofit museum.The 15 paintings depict the architecture that defines Black Mountain’s small-town charm – Avena’s Bowling Alley, In-the-Oaks, the 1921 fire station, City Hall, among them – some still here, others long gone.“Step Back in Time” is full of facts and legends from the early days of Black Mountain. Tales of Davy Crockett wooing another man’s wife, the beauty parlor that may have once been a funeral home, and the dog who went grocery shopping for his owners are part of the exhibit.Tax-deductible, one-year memberships are available at swannanoavalleymuseum.org.
